Appearance: Kaoru has two to dress, but a few things about his appearance always stay the same. One would be the very noticeable big yet dull eyes he possesses as well as the black hair. He is also rather small of stature, built more like the girls of the series rather than the males. This built gives him the perfect opening to dress up like a girl. When he does that he usually wears a pink kimono for females as well as a lot of accessories and make up and his hair will be tied together in a form of a Japanese knot (though it could also be a wig). As a girl he talks in a soft voice and polite speech patterns. He also carries himself extremely elegant.
However when he dresses up like a boy he wears Western clothes like black trousers and a black coat. His tone - depending on the situation - becomes either more aggressive or taunting and a little bit deeper overall and he doesn't bother with polite speech patterns anymore. He has short hair then, the only thing that stays the same are the bangs that frame his face. While he doesn't carry himself as elegantly anymore, his moves are still pretty agile.
There is also his oni-form, which basically only colors his hair white, his eyes yellow and two horns grow out from his forehead.
Background: Kaoru used to live in a hidden village that belonged to the Yukimura-clan and he was very attached to this twin sister, Chizuru. The village, however, was burnt down by humans because the Yukimura-clan didn't want to help overthrowing the shogunate. Kaoru fled the place together with Chizuru, but the two of them were separated eventually. Chizuru was taken in by Yukimura Kodo, while Kaoru was given to the Nagumo-clan. As it turns out, the Nagumo-clan had hoped for the female twin, as those are very rare but needed for breeding. The Nagumos mistreated and abused Kaoru his whole life until he escaped the cage by killing them all.
From then on he goes on a quest to take revenge on Chizuru, as he thinks everything that happened to him was her fault. He shows up as a beautiful girl to stalk Chizuru and sees that she starts to care a lot for the members of the shinsengumi. He targets Okita Souji, who had saved Kaoru from possible rape, in particular. Kaoru visits him at night when a few rasetsu - men that had drunken an elixir called ochimizu to get stronger but also go insane for blood - at the headquarters. Kaoru uses his knowledge of Okita's tuberculosis and his wish to fight again and gives him the ochimizu while Okita was backed into the corner. Okita does take the ochimizu and faints after he made short work of the rasetsu. It is also at this time he reveals to Okita and Chizuru who he really is and and that he tells her that he wants to take revenge on her.
Later he gives advice to the enemies of the shinsengumi and they manage to shot Kondou, the commander of the shinsengumi. This results in Okita getting even more riled up and Kaoru lures him into another trap in which Okita gets shot by several gunmen as he protects Chizuru.

Personality: The first thing that is noticeable about Kaoru - even if the common person wouldn't notice it at first at all is the fact that he is an extremely good actor. If you meet him as a girl you could probably never tell that he is not a girl. His acting skills of course also request that he is somewhat of a good liar, as can be seen when he plainly denies the fact that he had been near the bulletin board while Sano had fought there, even though he actually was. Hidden beneath the acting skills is a rather bitter and cruel boy that is eaten up by hatred.
The bitterness stems from the fact that humans destroyed the village he was living in , the fact that he had been separated from his beloved sister after-wards and of course the treatment he received for not being a female oni by the Nagumo-clan who had taken him in, who likely told him countless times how he was worthless (to the point that it had become a part of him) and abused him. He has also grown envious of his sister who got the kind and gentle treatment, had people who protected her and forgot all about him on top of it and thus, felt all alone in the world. This shows there is a strange despair behind his actions that speak even louder when you look at the way he obsesses about Chizuru. There is a part of him that cares deeply about her, that protects her from the shadows and that gets jealous of the people growing close to her. The greater part of him wants her to suffer as much as he did as he blames everything that has happened to him on her which affects a lot of his personality and the things he does.
Firstly, Kaoru is extremely manipulative, best seen when interacts with Okita. He talks Okita into drinking the ochimizu, as Kaoru is aware of Okita's illness and he uses a moment of weakness to hand the shinsengumi captain the elixir or tricks him into thinking that people would go and shoot Chizuru, but his real goal was to shoot Okita all along so that Chizuru had to come to the conclusion that it was her fault since without her, Okita wouldn't have gotten shot in the first place and so she had to suffer from it. Seeing the suffering from her is like a pleasure for Kaoru, so it is also safe to say he is somewhat of a sadist. He also enjoys to toy around with his victims, for example he makes Chizuru believe that her blood would help Okita only to reveal later that Okita will go insane anyways. This is also a sign of Kaoru's cruelty - he has no qualms to use the life of someone else to get what he wants. Kaoru had also come to believe that the world punishes the weak and rewards the strong ones, which is another reason why he has no qualms to kill weaker people. Finally, you could say he is not entirely sane anymore, as his greatest goal is to kill all of those hatred humans and build a kingdom for oni instead -and revive the Yukimura-clan - using the rasetsu.
You could say one of Kaoru's virtues is patience. He doesn't rush things unneccessarily if there is no reason for it and let things build up slowly before he takes action. Another strength of him would be that Kaoru never gets overly emotional over anything - not on the outside at least and he handles things usually with a calm attitude, no matter if the things look bad for him or not, which brings up his next strong point - he is also rather level-headed. Even if Kaoru feels strongly about something, he has a habit to analyze the situation before he makes any unneccessary moves. Kaoru also shows signs that he can be extremely dedicated if he wants to be, going as far to drink the ochimizu himself just so that he might be able to beat Okita and realize his dream of resurrecting the Yukimura-clan. Kaoru is also fully aware that he is the kind of person who goes to whatever lengths neccessary to achieve his goal.

He is also a somewhat accomplished sword-fighter, professional at using the sword though he is not as strong as the other oni like Kazama - who uses a lot of brute strength - or as good as rasetsu Okita and he certainly lacks the finesse of Okita's skills, but he still easily defeats Kondou, who is the commander of the shinsengumi and is said to be extremely strong.
Items: Kaoru will bring his sword, the daitsuren, with him. It is the sign that he is from the Yukimura-clan and Chizuru's brother. He'll also bring with him a bottle of ochimizu, as he might want to try it out on someone or himself and his women clothing to fool around a little bit.

The only difference was made by the expression on their face. His sister's happy and innocent expressions - alone thinking of them made Kaoru angry and he had to hold back an annoyed sound. Instead he reached for the lipstick on the desk and applied it to his lips.
Funny, if it wasn't for his sister he wouldn't be sitting here doing this. If it wasn't for her, it wouldn't have come naturally for him to dress up as a girl. If it wasn't for her, he wouldn't have suffered so much. Could you blame him thinking everything was her fault?
Kaoru found himself in that vicious cycle of thinking again. He took a deep breath to relax again. He couldn't let his emotions control himself like that. He had been patient with extracting his revenge up until now. Every step had been carefully planned and set in motion. Just because this was not Japan it didn't mean that everything was futile up until now. While he didn't have exactly the means to set up the plan to kill all humans, not yet anyways, he would still find ways to make them suffer as much as he did.
And then, finally... Chizuru. He would make her remember everything. Their peaceful days, when their village was burnt down, him... she will have to learn about the truth and cruelty of life before he could forgive her. Then they could be together again like they used to be when they were children.
With one last glance into the mirror he settled the lipstick back to its place again and stood up. For now he would grin and bear it.
